Silver Spring, MD: Rachel Carson Greenway

There is a little-known greenway with hiking trails and a waterfall right off of Route 29 north of Silver Spring, MD. The entrance, a tiny unmarked paved area where the curb disappears temporarily, is on the right side of the road, behind a pretty brick building across the street from the Trader Joe's. There are several parking spaces behind the brick building, and once you're out of the car and in the grass it will feel like you are really in nature and not right next to a ridiculously busy highway.

I have driven past this waterfall every week for two years on my way to school, but I had no idea it even existed until Eric told me about it one day last year. On our way to Atlanta, we stopped for a few minutes to check it out.

There are lots of trails heading out from this location, and hopefully sometime we can come back and hike them. This is only about 10-15 minutes away from our apartment, which is much closer than all the other hiking locations around the area. We saw a couple of people farther down the trails while we were there.

If you get a chance to check it out, it was like a refuge in the middle of so much traffic. When you are near the dam, you can't even hear the traffic.
